The Historic Molly Brown Summer House

Margaret Tobin Brown was born the daughter of poor Irish immigrants in 1867. Flamboyant and generous, she became a legend in her own time and was immortalized as the "Unsinkable Molly Brown". The Molly Brown Summer House was this indomitable woman's celebrated retreat. Visitors hear charming, nostalgic and delightful accounts not only of Molly and J.J., but also of the Fehlmann family who later purchased the property in 1928.

Molly and J.J. purchased land parcels that would eventually grow into a 400-acre country estate, featuring a fishing pond, terraced lawns and stunning flower beds. Molly named the property Avoca Lodge, from the Thomas Moore poem The Meeting of the Waters. In 1897, the couple built this two-story buttered brick home as their country home.

The Meeting of the Waters
by Sir Thomas Moore

There is not in the wide world and valley so sweet
As the vale in whose bosom the bright waters meet;
Oh! The last rays of feeling and life must depart,
Ere the bloom of that valley shall fade from my heart.

Yet was not that Nature had shed o’er the scene
Her purest of crystal and brightest of green;
Twas not her soft magic of streamlet or hill,
Oh! no, - it was something more exquisite still.

Twas that friends, the beloved of my bosom, were near,
Who made every scene of enchantment more dear,
And who felt how the best charms of nature improve,
When we see them reflected from looks that we love.

Sweet vale of Avoca! How calm could I rest!
In thy bosom of shade, with the friends I love best.
Where the storms that we feel in this cold world should cease,
And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace.

In 1928 the Fehlmann family purchased the house and the remaining 100 acres and five generations of the family have lovingly continued to maintain it.
